What even is this?

What is a Hackathon?

A Hackathon is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects.

Who should attend?

Anyone with an interest in coding, technology, and making things should attend a Hackathon. Yes, we need tech ninjas, makers, game programmers, and rebels who code, but we also need to make everything look amazing, work intuitively, and provide a stellar user experience. Don't fit in those categories? We still need you! Come with your unique industry experience and the problems you want to solve.

I am just a beginner; will I be able to participate?

Yes! Hackathons are a great place for beginners to gain knowledge and exposure. You don't have to be a pro to add value to your team! Read this piece on why you should participate.

What should I bring?

Bring your laptops, mobile phones, wearable computing devices, and whatever else inspires you. Above all, bring your energy and don’t worry if you forget something, there will be tons of stuff to do. Power codes and power strips are good too! We also suggest you bring copies of your resumé if you'd like to have them on hand for the career expo (not required as you'll have electronic versions in the designated Dropbox folder).

Is there an official code of conduct?

Absolutely!

Who ultimately owns the project and the IP?

The team retains ownership of the project and work done and can decide how to handle things moving forward.

I have never attended a Hackathon before. What can I expect?

Here's a good starting point.

So usually do people develop mobile apps or web apps for the Hackathon?

Some Hackathons are geared to specific technologies, but this one is open to all.

Do I need to be able to participate in the entire event from start to finish to be a part of a team? (Or, can I join later in the weekend if my team is okay with it?)

We are strongly discouraging pre-constituted teams, so you'll need to attend on Friday for the team-building portion and work out any absences with them. It's our recommendation that you attend the entirety of the event.

How do I register? Is the registration deadline firm?

Get your tickets here! The deadline is firm because the event will sell out.

I registered, but I'm no longer going to be able to attend. What should I do?

We are unable to issue refunds for tickets, but if you request a transfer for your ticket via EventBrite, we will work with you to try and make that happen.

Tell me about teams and projects.

Do I need to have a team to attend?

No, we will create teams on Friday for the weekend and you'll get to choose your team based on what project you want to work on.

Can I bring a project I have already started working on?

No, projects in progress are not allowed.

What kinds of projects and applications can we create?

We have some suggested tracks to get you started, but the sky is the limit!

How are teams determined?

Pre-constituted teams are discouraged. You are welcome to brainstorm in advance, but you need to be open to new ideas and collaboration. Teams will form around ideas on Friday and will pitch (to grow their teams) on Friday at 6pm. You must arrive by this time to join a team.

Do projects include both front end and back end development?

Absolutely, all are needed.

Are there any particular coding languages I need to know?

No, you do not have to be a programmer / coder to participate. Of course, this is a Hackathon so we do need developers with skills across the board to participate.

Where and when is all of this happening?

Where/when are Hackathon events happening?
The schedule is being continually updated with additional details. This map includes all of the locations you'll need to know about.

Where do I put my car?

We've rounded up some parking options for you and priced them as accurately as possible (though this is Atlanta, so be prepared for changes in availability and pricing). More details coming soon on the travel page.

I need details about travel and lodging.

Is there a MARTA station near the Hackathon?

Midtown Station is closest to ATDC. Midtown Station is also closest to Tech Square Labs. This map has all the details.

What are my hotel options?
We're updating the travel page with details continuously.

Is there a way for me to connect with other attendees who want to room-share?
Send us an email (hackathon@womenwhocode.com) to request access to the Hackathon Slack channel where you can coordinate room and/or ride shares independently.

Talk to me about food.

I have dietary restrictions. Can you accommodate me?
We will do our best to provide a diversity of food but we cannot guarantee dairy/gluten-free and vegan items at every meal. You will have access to refrigerators in the 2nd and 3rd floor break rooms at ATDC for food storage.

I require a continuous supply of caffeine. What are my best options?
We will supply you with drip coffee throughout the Hackathon, and there are several Starbucks within walking distance of our venues.
